Just about to set sail for Ireland. I’m facilitating a workshop with Soo Downe in Cork, around facing and dealing with fear in maternity services, finding courage to advocate & challenge systems, self-care and love - and respectful maternity care. This photo was taken around 1960 in Bray, Ireland. My Dad was Irish and we were visiting - two of my sisters (I have four) in the sea with me in my Dad’s arms. This is why I love the Emerald Isle. ☘️ #memories
When the weather starts to get warmer, and you realise the moments spent enjoying outdoors are the best ever...
My son @tombyrom83 with his son. Tom is a chef, and works almost constantly. He’s a grafter. Like many young parents - he and @anjpriz are trying to build a future and so when there’s an opportunity to walk and talk - we all love it.
I’m contacted regularly by student midwives and midwives who feel sad, burnt out, tired and weary - and at the end of their tether. I also hear from others who feel pulled into negative cultures just so that they can fit in. About bullying behaviour, not feeling able to stand up for themselves or able to advocate for women. It’s hard. It’s more than hard at times, it’s unbearable 😢
During difficult times I’ve always sought out the right support, to talk about how things are. Even this action isn’t easy - finding the best person to share concerns with can be tricky🧐
As well as this, keep the reason why you wanted to be a midwife close to your heart. Remember how much you worked to be in the best job ever. With this in mind, stick up for your colleagues, and advocate for the women and families in your care. Touch base with your ability to love, to nurture and to care ❤️
If it’s too much and you need to walk away, then that’s important too. Loving and looking after yourself is crucial 🥰 to your wellbeing 🤱🏽❤️🤗
